It takes a fleet of seriously-specified rigs to move the thousands of tonnes of steel consumed by Australia's largest infrastructure projects.

One business capitalising on the nation's construction boom is Crane Trucks R Us, which runs a fleet of 25 specially-modified trucks and 20 trailers from its depots in Brisbane, Melbourne and Newcastle.

Owned and directed by Fred Mohammed, Crane Trucks R Us has forged a reputation as one of the transport providers of choice for scores of large and small projects during the last 10 years.

Fred says the business' crane-mounted trucks are primarily used to move reinforced steel to construction sites along Australia's eastern seaboard.

One of Crane Trucks R Us' current projects is the $4.2 billion Brisbane Airport Link, managed by Thiess John Holland. Since beginning work on the link, Fred and his crew have successfully moved more than 300,000 tonnes of steel and are adding to that tally each week.

"The airport link is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia at the moment so we're definitely keeping busy," Fred said.

"Our main task involves delivering steel for tunnel construction for the duration of the project, which is should be completed around November 2012."

Crane Trucks R Us maintains a variety of trucks ranging from six-tonners to 24-tonne semi trailers.

Some of the fleet has been fitted with island cabs and modified to haul 12-metre-long lengths of reinforced steel to ensure they're fit-for-purpose.

"When specifying our trucks, we reinforce the chassis then install the crane frames and the cranes themselves. We use Palfinger cranes that lift between 3.5 and 6 tonnes," Fred said.

"We've also invested a lot of time and effort in ensuring our drivers have access to the very best in safety equipment.

"Each rig is fitted with a cabin smoke alarm, fire blanket, handbrake alarm on the doors and strobe lighting on the exterior.

"Visibility is obviously an important consideration for us and you'll understand just how serious we are when you see all of the lighting on our trucks.

"We also use fully-remote-controlled cranes that allow workers to operate the machinery away from the trucks."

Crane Trucks R Us recently acquired two medium-duty Isuzu FVY 1400s for operation out of its Brisbane and Melbourne depots.

Fred says he opted for Isuzus over other brands for two main reasons.

"It came down to serviceability and reliability," he said.

"Isuzu's dealership coverage is extensive and that's very important to me. Knowing that a service location is never too far away, that a wide range of parts is always in stock, and that opening hours are usually six days and nights a week is why I chose Isuzu over other brands."

Fred says Crane Trucks R Us has the ability and experience to deliver transport solutions to organisations operating in the mining, construction, industrial, rental and government sectors.

"Crane Trucks R Us is an accredited member of the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation scheme and compliant with the national code of practice for the construction industry and Federal Government," he said.

"We're a dynamic organisation with nation-wide capacity and a track record for producing quality outcomes in large infrastructure projects."
