Firies from the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) have donned lycra, saddled up, and are pedalling more than 2000 kilometres down the Queensland coast in a charity bike ride to raise money for child burns victims.
The inaugural charity bike ride, taking place from 17 – 26 May, covers two simultaneous routes from Bilinga and Cairns to Rockhampton, with all funds raised going directly to the Queensland Royal Children's Hospital Burns Unit.
Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL), through its state office, has contributed to the initiative as major sponsor of the Bike for Burns ride.
IAL Queensland Zone Sales Manager, Andrew Harbison, said the company was very pleased to be a major sponsor, especially given the long relationship Isuzu has enjoyed with the QFRS.
"We have a very strong working relationship with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. They brought the initiative to us and we felt that it was very worthwhile, and so were happy to become involved," Mr Harbison said.
"As Australian truck market sales leader for the past 18 years, Isuzu appreciates the opportunity to assist one of its loyal customers in their quest to raise money for an organisation such the Queensland Royal Children's Hospital Burns Unit. This was one of those opportunities," he said.
The Bike for Burns charity ride was established as part of QFRS' 'Wellness' program, which includes a combination of physical and educational activities designed to improve and monitor the occupational health and fitness of personnel, thus improving their ability to respond to incidents safely and effectively.
The ride was officially launched at the Queensland Royal Children's Hospital on 19 May. IAL representatives were proud to attend along with The Director General, Department of Emergency Services, Fiona McKersie, and the Assistant Commissioner, Community Safety and Training, Reg Christanson
