A team of Australian Isuzu truck technicians has taken out this year’s prestigious Isuzu World Technical Competition, (commonly known as the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’) held in Japan in early December.

In winning the sought after ‘Golden Spanner Award’, the Australian team competed against and defeated entrants from 20 Isuzu truck distributor nations world-wide.

Comprising Westar Truck Centre (Melbourne) Technician, James Daffy, Brisbane Isuzu Technician, Bernie Pease and coached by Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Service Manager - NSW, Adam Bell, the Australian team built on last year’s creditable fourth placing to unseat defending champions, Japan.

Each team was required to complete a series of tests examining its measurement accuracy, vehicle inspection standards, fault identification capability, repair ability and theoretical understanding.

The victory completes a six month process for the team members in which they first had to see off competitors as part of IAL’s own domestic National Technical Skills Competition for the right to represent IAL and the Australian Dealer Network at the international competition.

In commenting on the achievement, IAL National Training Manager, David Smith, said the competition was hotly contested by all involved and to win was a great achievement.

“The trio has created history becoming the first Australian team to win the competition which is now in its 6th year,” Mr Smith said.

“The result is even more impressive considering the significant resources that some of the competing teams allocate in their preparation for the event.

“Congratulations to James, Bernie and Adam – Australian Isuzu truck customers are definitely leaving their trucks in good hands when service time comes.”

This year’s I-1 Grand Prix coincided with a business trip to Japan by senior IAL Directors who saw the victory first-hand, and were thrilled with the outcome and associated friendly bragging rights within the Isuzu Motors Group.

IAL Director and COO, Phil Taylor, said the victory was an outstanding effort.

“This result speaks volumes for the depth of IAL’s technical training and the overall abilities demonstrated by our Dealer Service Departments around Australia.  It is a win for Isuzu Australia and our customers,” he said.
