Hino Australia has officially launched its new 300 Series light-duty truck range, which consists of more than 60 models featuring various cab, engine, and transmission combinations. While some 300 Series vehicles require a light or medium rigid truck licence, many are car-licenced and designed to feel similar to the experience of driving a passenger car without sacrificing payload or towing capacity. Hino says its new 300 Series embodies the firm’s dedication to versatility, performance, safety, and driver comfort.
“Over the last 20 years, we have offered our customers a large range of light-duty models, building an enviable reputation for performance, reliability, and safety,” says Daniel Petrovski, manager of product strategy for Hino Australia. “Our range of 300 Series car-licenced trucks offers a level of safety that matches or is better than its light commercial competitors, with the added advantages of a nominal payload of up to 2.5 tonnes and the ability to tow a 3.5-t trailer.”
The 300 Series range includes 616, 617, 716, 717, 721, 816, 916, 917, and 921 models with Standard, Wide, or Crew cabs. They have gross vehicle masses ranging from 4.5 to 8.5 t with wheelbases of between 2,500 and 4,400 millimetres. Hino will also offer an expanded lineup of 300 Series Built to Go (BTG) trucks. These vehicles feature factory-installed Hino Genuine bodies that cut down on lead times and make it “possible to order a BTG truck today and drive it away tomorrow,” according to Petrovski. Hino plans to release more details about 300 Series BTG trucks in the fourth quarter of this year.
Engines & Transmissions
Hino’s 300 Series trucks are available with 150- to 205-horsepower (112- to 153-kilowatt) engines that produce between 420 and 600 newton-metres of torque. Most trucks in the range are powered by 4-litre N04C common-rail turbo-diesel engines, but there is also a 5-litre J05E-UJ engine available for select 721 and 921 models that hits the top end of the horsepower and torque ranges.
Transmission options include fully automatic and five- or six-speed manual gearboxes. New 721 and 921 Wide and Crew Cab models come with the A465HD automatic transmission as standard. Hino also offers hybrid versions of the 616, 716, and 916 with automated manual gearboxes.
Hino calls 300 Series the “safest Japanese truck in its class,” and backs that claim up with a laundry list of standard safety features across the range. Hino’s SmartSafe system combines a pre-collision system that uses radar and cameras to detect potential collisions and features autonomous emergency braking with a pedestrian detection system and lane departure warning tech. Other technologies include vehicle stability control and a reversing camera.
Other standard safety features include daytime running lights, which make the vehicle more visible to other drivers and pedestrians; four-wheel disc brakes complemented by an anti-lock braking system, brake assist, and electronic brake-force distribution; a UN ECE R29 European crash-certified cab; and an engine immobiliser to protect against theft.
Driver comfort was also a point of focus for Hino when designing the new 300 Series. All models in the range come standard with air conditioning, and Crew Cab configurations have an extra unit in the rear to keep passengers cool as well. Every 300 Series truck features a telescopic steering column and adjustable steering wheel with built-in ergonomic controls for cruise control, entertainment, instrumentation-related menus, and more. Adjustable suspension driver’s seats are also included, but seats in Wide Cab models have torsion bar suspensions and “a large slide adjustment range on inclined rails,” Hino explains.
Other interior features include a 4.2-inch LCD multi information display and a 6.5-inch high-definition touchscreen display that originally launched with the 500 Series Standard Cab last year. The Android-based multimedia system supports up to four cameras for improved visibility and features AM/FM and DAB+ radio, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, DVR, satellite navigation, tyre pressure monitoring, and more.
