Now that the Federal Government has extended the $150,000-per-asset instant tax write-off threshold to the end of 2020, eligible businesses of up to $500 million in annual revenue can continue to invest in equipment and vehicles to their advantage. Isuzu, for one, suggests that its D-MAX 1-tonne ute could be just the thing. Tested for more than 4 million kilometres in extreme weather and terrain, the Euro 5-compliant D-MAX can reliably play a variety of roles.
The D-MAX Up Close
The Isuzu D-MAX comes in single cab, Space Cab, or dual cab form, seating up to five passengers. You can choose a 4x4 edition with knob-selectable low four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive, or a 4x2 model in High Ride or Low Ride versions.
The D-MAX gets its power from a 3.0-litre, 130-kilowatt turbo diesel engine also found in Isuzu’s light trucks. With a torque rating of 430 newton-meters, the stout, common-rail motor allows the ute to tow loads of up to 3.5 tonnes. It features a long-lasting steel timing chain and Isuzu’s split camshaft designed for smoother deceleration.
The power hits the road through a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The latter provides Rev-Tronic sequential manual shifting and optional Grade Logic technology for optimal gearing on slopes. Other active safety and control features include Hill Descent Control, Electronic Stability Control, Emergency Brake Assist, Trailer Sway Control, front-rear Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, and others.
Isuzu enlisted the help of design house Pininfarina to develop the D-MAX’s sleek, aerodynamic body. It rests on a truck-derived, ladder-frame chassis for durability and towing stability. Ride comfort and handling come from 18-inch (457-millimetre) alloy wheels and a Flex-Ride suspension, which also helps out with carrying capacity. There are steel guards protecting the ute’s underbody, which has a 30-degree approach angle in front and 22-degree descent angle in the rear to tackle steep terrain.
The cockpit of the D-MAX features a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio buttons and available cruise control. Options include leather seat accents and a smart key passive entry system with push-button engine start. The roof-mounted speakers in Isuzu’s Sky Sound system are controlled via touchscreen, providing access to Bluetooth connectivity, available SatNav guidance, and an optional reversing camera.
Isuzu gives D-MAX buyers a six-year warranty, six years of roadside assistance, and seven years of capped-price servicing.
