Visy, a recycling specialist based in Victoria, recently brought on two demonstration trucks, an IVECO X-Way AS and an International ProStar, to help keep up with COVID-19 related demand. The X-Way is powered by 510-horsepower (380-kilowatt) engine that produces up to 2,300 newton-metres of torque, and the ProStar is a day cab truck with a 550-hp (410-kW) engine that produces up to 2,508 newton-metres of torque. The prime movers took on single-trailer and B-Double-trailer work, respectively.
“Record retail sales spikes showed that consumers were out in force spending large amounts and stocking up during the earlier stages of COVID,” says Glen Fulton, Visy fleet and equipment manager. “The sudden surge in consumer activity resulted in a mountain of packaging that tripped the supply chain and left most companies with an equipment shortfall and unable to properly handle the extra workload. Fortunately, Visy was able to access the X-Way and ProStar prime movers from IVECO to help provide additional road freight capacity.”
A Good Fit
While both the IVECO and the International have been a hit with Visy’s drivers, the X-Way was the one that was the most natural fit for the firm’s drivers.
“The X-Way has proved to be a very comfortable and capable vehicle with the drivers commenting favourably on its appointments and quiet cabin,” Fulton says. “Its cabover configuration also provided familiarity for the drivers, as our fleet is entirely made up of European cabovers; this means there was little for them to become accustomed to, so they felt comfortable with the vehicle straightaway. Having the chance to trial the X-Way opened our eyes to the IVECO brand.”
Visy’s positive experience with the X-Way and ProStar led the firm to bring in a third demonstrator, an IVECO Stralis AS-L 6x4 prime mover with a 560-hp (418-kW) engine, a 16-speed automated manual transmission, and a gross combination mass of 90 tonnes. Fulton says that the truck’s specs meet his company’s needs, and they will monitor its performance over time.
“Key considerations are safety, driver comfort, including seating and steering adjustment, sleeper cab appointments, fuel efficiency, whole of life running costs, and sustainability,” he explains. “As an Australian company and manufacturer, we value what we do and are also interested in supporting other Australian manufacturers where possible, which would make IVECO a good fit for us.”
