The Mercedes-Benz Actros was named Truck of the Year 2020 by the International Truck of the Year (IToY) jury, a group of 24 commercial vehicle editors and senior journalists working for industry magazines from across Europe. This is the fifth time the Actros has won the award, the first being in 1997 with the release of the first model in the range. Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ head of development, Professor Dr. Uwe Baake, was on hand to receive the award just ahead of the SOLUTRANS International Show For Road & Urban Transport Solutions held in Lyon, France, from 19 to 23 November.
Technology Leads The Way
Technological advancement is a major consideration for the IToY jury, and the Mercedes-Benz Actros stands out largely thanks to its range of driver assistance and safety features, including Predictive Powertrain Control cruise control, active drive assist, active brake assist, and sideguard assist. The Actros’ Multimedia Cockpit and MirrorCam, which replaces exterior mirrors, also played a part in helping the newest iteration in the series come away with the award. “With the introduction of the new Actros, Mercedes-Benz has brought a highly modern truck onto our roads which smooths out the path to achieving automated driving in the future,” says Gianenrico Griffini, president of the international jury.
Motivation For The Future
“We are very pleased and proud that the Truck of the Year jury has recognised our efforts of the past years and months with this distinction,” says Dr. Baake. “Thank you on behalf of the company and the entire team. This will really spur us on to continue giving our all and fulfilling the highest developmental standards for our trucks, especially when it comes to the future-oriented topics of electromobility, automated driving and digitalisation within our sector.”
