UD Trucks recently added a handful of new models to its heavy-duty Quon range, each of which features an 8-litre GH8 engine that produces 357 horsepower and up to 1,428 newton-metres of torque. The new engine option reduces the weight of the truck by 300 kilograms, which leads to an increased payload capacity of between 500 and 700 kilograms. “There is a great need among customers operating over short and medium distances for small displacement engines,” says Kouji Maruyama, senior vice president of Japan sales for UD Trucks. “With the high loading 8-litre engine models, Quon’s high performance can make a real contribution to efficient logistics.”
The Quon lineup, which launched 15 years ago, features several versatile trucks available in a wide range of configurations, including cargo, refrigerated, tipper, and mixer trucks. Specific examples include a dump truck that can lift more than 10 tonnes’ worth of material and a mixer truck that comes standard with a drum with a capacity of 4.4 cubic metres, with the option for a 4.5-cubic-metre capacity drum. The newest models powered by 8-litre engines also feature 12-speed ESCOT-VI automated manual transmissions, which offer a smoother driver experience regardless of the application.
An Eye On Safety
In addition to improved drivability and fuel efficiency, the new Quon models also have several safety features designed to keep all drivers on the road safer. This includes a collision detection system with automatic braking (if necessary), driver alert system, lane departure warning system, UD Stability Control (UDSC), and other general safety features, like LED headlamps and air disk brakes.
