With Volvo Group Australia (VGA) CEO and President Martin Merrick and Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz present, Linfox Logistics Executive Chairman Peter Fox took delivery of the first locally manufactured Euro 6-compliant Volvo FM prime movers in late September. The delivery took place at Volvo’s Wacol plant in Brisbane, marking the first of a 100-plus-vehicle order by Linfox, a supply chain solutions provider in the Asia Pacific region.
“Volvo’s new Australian-made Euro 6 vehicles combine local manufacturing expertise with our key commitments at Linfox—to act sustainably and lead in safety and compliance,” Fox says.
Volvo has been building trucks at the Wacol facility since 1972.
Not Dead Yet
“You’ll hear some people say manufacturing in Australia is dead,” says Buchholz. “I say you only need to ask the employees here at this Wacol site, who I might add are building these trucks of tomorrow, about that. These employees are building the trucks of tomorrow that will deliver the essential goods and services our communities need.”
“We are working together to drive a safer, cleaner, more productive transport industry here in this country,” Merrick agrees. “Manufacturing our products in Australia makes us strong, while buying Australian Made promotes success in our community. And now we are building our cleanest, safest trucks here in this country.”
The initial Volvo FM prime movers from the Wacol plant are equipped with 11- and 13-litre engines ranging from 460 to 500 horsepower. They include a full range of active and passive safety equipment and meet the criteria of the “stringent” Swedish BOF10 crash test, Volvo says. In terms of sustainability, Fox says investing in sustainable vehicles has helped Linfox considerably reduce its emissions in recent years.
Volvo says the FM, which is available in tractor and rigid variants, is its most versatile truck in terms of its ability to handle tipper, tanker, transporter, or crane truck applications. Euro 6 models include the FM11 HA 6x4 and FM13 HA 6x4 Tractor Air Ride models. The former has a 460-hp (339-kilowatt) Volvo D11K 11-litre Euro 6 SCR engine and a 50-tonne maximum GCM (gross combination mass). The latter has a 500-hp (368-kW) Volvo D13K 13litre Euro 6 SCR 500 engine and 70-tonne GCM. Both carry the Australian Made certification.
