Sellers beware of oversees buyers willing to offer more than your asking price. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is and offers like these may be scams.

Buyers: Beware of trucks and/or products listed well below an ordinary asking price. Offers like these may also be scams, particularly if the contact number is disconnected.

A Few Tips

• If it's too good to be true, then it probably is.
• Verify the buyer or seller's details.
• Private parties selling a vehicle should be able to produce evidence of ownership.
• Request proof of Title, Registration, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
• Request a specific photo not common to web postings, such as the actual VIN, or a close-up of a specific component.
• Shipping a vehicle any distance can be costly, so be cautious if a seller is offering free shipping.
• Sometimes buyers can be involved in scams.
  Common traps include buyers claiming to pay by bank transfer or cheque for an amount more than required, then asking the seller to pay the difference.
  Obviously, if the bank transfer fails or the cheque bounces you'll be out of pocket.

Did you hear about the buyer from an oil rig? 100% Scam

A buyer approaches you and tells you he wants to buy your truck that you had posted online but avoids meeting you in person or calling to discuss details.

They will give you a number of reasons for urgency of the sale and why they can not inspect or test drive the vehicle. These include: purchasing the vehicle as a surprise gift, a family member was in a car accident and needs a car urgently, they are currently working interstate or overseas and will be returning soon, or they are working off-shore.

The scammer then asks all the normal questions, negotiates a lower price and, when the deal is done, asks the seller to open a PayPal account to receive the funds. The buyer will then give a reason to why they cannot pay the shipping company and askes the seller to organise this payment on their behalf and they will wire the funds along with the cost of the item through Paypal. An email then gets sent to the seller apparently from PayPal advising that funds were received for both item and shipping cost but would be withheld until you release the funds to the shipping company. Theses emails are fake. The money you transfer to the shipping company is to a fake account and you will not see that fund nor the Paypal funds.

If you are selling vehicles or machinery online, you should be suspicious of any potential buyers who are from overseas/interstate or offering to buy your item/s without an inspection. Two or three emails between you and the buyer does not mean you know who they are.

If you feel something does not seem right or if it is too good to be true - act on it.

Tips on avoiding Scams from Private Sellers

• Be wary of items advertised at unusually low prices. If an offer seems too good to be true, it often is.
• Be wary of purchasing an item that you are unable to inspect
• Take time to verify the vehicle's details and location
• Avoid dealing with anyone who asks for payment via wire transfer prior to inspection
• Don't provide your personal details or login details over email.
• If a seller does not offer a warranty or receipt, find out why. Hoax, counterfeit, bogus and stolen items can occasionally slip through and appear to be real listings. Always read the Private Seller advertisement description carefully and ask questions.
• Always try to confirm the identity of a seller at the beginning. Scammers will normally use generic email accounts to 'negotiate' anonymously via email. They will also be hard to establish contact with over the phone on an Australian number.
