    About Semitrailers

A crucial link in the worldwide logistics chain, semitrailers are designed to efficiently transport large loads such as construction equipment, farm machinery, and other heavy assets behind a prime mover. Various types of semitrailers are also ideal for hauling liquids, cars, steel, lumber, refrigerated foods, livestock, and other big, bulky items.

2024 AAA Trailers Tandem Axle Tag Trailer

Semitrailers usually have two or three axles and connect to prime movers using a fifth wheel hitch. Together, the truck and trailer are called an “articulated combination” or “tractor-trailer.” Semitrailers are longer and heavier than trailers designed for medium-duty trucks or light-duty vehicles and can handle much heavier loads.

Trailer sizes vary greatly, but a single semitrailer may be up to 13.6 metres (44.6 feet) long under certain conditions. Some truckies pull two trailers in a B double set or three semitrailers in a road train configuration for greater efficiency in remote areas.

    Curtainsider Semitrailers

Curtainsider semitrailers are similar to pantech (or dry van) trailers, but instead of rigid side walls, they protect the load with tarps on either side. The side curtains are retractable, and a single person at ground level can uncover any part of the cargo for easy unloading from either side. This endears them to delivery drivers and hauliers who regularly carry LTL (less-than-load) shipments.

    Drop-Deck Semitrailers

Drop decks have a relatively low bed with a raised deck in the front over the trailer’s fifth wheel hitch. These semitrailers make it easy to haul all but the tallest machinery, especially units with folding rear ramps that allow mobile equipment to drive on or off the deck. The front deck can carry additional cargo placed there via forklift or telehandler.

Some drop decks are widener models with a hydraulic system to widen the bed, while others are extendable lengthwise to support longer payloads. A double-drop trailer is a variation with a low, central deck between elevated front and rear decks.

    Flat-Top Semitrailers

Also called “flatbed trailers,” flat tops are known for the full-length, level beds above their wheels. Hauliers use flat-top semitrailers to transport equipment of moderate height to construction sites, straw and hay bales to farms, steel to factories, and many other types of payloads to their destinations.

    Refrigerated Semitrailers

Refrigerated semitrailers, or reefers, keep food, vaccines, flowers, and other sensitive items cold or frozen in one or more compartments or temperature zones. They are typically pantech or van-style trailers with a front-mounted refrigeration unit from Carrier Transicold, Thermo King, ATR, Mitsubishi, or others.

    Tank Semitrailers

Tank trailers are designed to carry liquids such as water, fuel, oil, tar, chemicals, and industrial gases for roadbuilding applications, oil and gas production, and other uses. Pneumatic and dry bulk models can transport powdered or granulated materials, while vacuum tankers are used for sewage and waste removal.

    Tipper Semitrailers

Tipper trailers, also called “dump trailers,” use hydraulics or another mechanism to drop a load of dirt, rock, sand, or other material. TruckWorld lists tipper semitrailers that tip their payloads out the rear end, side, or bottom.

    Other Semitrailers

In TruckWorld’s Other Semitrailers category, you’ll find car carriers, dog trailers with a steerable front axle, dolly trailers for connecting multi-trailer road trains, low loaders to keep tall equipment under the transport height limit, skeletal trailer chassis for use with containers, and pantech trailers for palleted goods and general freight.
