    About Tipper Trucks

Tipper trucks, also known as “dump trucks” and “tip trucks,” are used to carry a wide assortment of materials in bulk, including asphalt, coal, debris, dirt, gravel, mulch, rocks, and snow. Tippers are loaded with such material at one location, often by wheel loaders or other, similar machines, and then transport it to another where they dump it out.

They’re a common sight on construction, excavation, mining, and waste management jobsites, just to name a few. The new and used tipper trucks for sale on TruckWorld.com.au are available in numerous configurations, and in light-, medium-, and heavy-duty classifications, with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from about 1,500 kilograms to more than 16,500 kg.

    Tippers Truck Origins

Wooden wagons with tipping beds are said to have originated on European farms in the late 1800s. The first motorised tipper trucks, though, were constructed in the United States in the early 1900s. Modern tippers include standard, side-dump, bottom-dump, and semi-trailer types.

    Tipper Truck Features

The standard tipper truck includes a chassis with a hydraulic hoist and an open-box tipping body mounted on the frame. The semi-trailer tipper truck includes a prime mover with a hydraulic hoist built into the trailer frame. A truck-and-dog combo consists of a standard tipper truck that pulls a tipper trailer called a “dog trailer,” which has its own hydraulic hoist to dump material loaded in it.

Most tipper trucks include a two-way tailgate that typically swings open from its top hinges. Some tippers instead use a high-lift tailgate that lifts open and above the tipper body. Side-dump tippers tip material out of the bed from the side, while bottom-load tippers offload material from the bottom.

Some tippers offer more than one dumping method, such as the Isuzu NMR “tri-tipper,” which has a 3-way bed that tips back and to both the left and the right sides, depending on the jobsite layout and the requirements of the task at hand.

    Tipper Truck Options

Manufacturers like Hino and Isuzu offer a long list of included and optional features and technologies on their trucks. For example, Hino’s 500 Built To Go range has options for six- and seven-speed manual, automated manual, and automatic transmissions. The Isuzu Tipper lineup provides options for the thickness of the all-steel tipper decks.

Most manufacturers equip their trucks with engines that provide greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions (or zero emissions, in the case of battery-electric trucks), as well as cabs that provide greater operator comfort, visibility, connectivity, and operational efficiency.

On TruckWorld.com.au, you’ll find tipper trucks with diesel engine power options ranging from roughly 200 horsepower to about 450 HP, and models with manual or automatic transmissions. Other features of note include built-in toolboxes, tow bars, manual and electric tarps, and a built-in crane. Additionally, the site has tippers that include a satellite navigation system and cameras and sensors that enable driver assistance and safety technologies, including adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation, vehicle stability control, anti-lock braking, and lane departure warning.
