ATA Lauds Heavy Vehicle Safety Projects

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA), which represents Australia’s trucking operators, recently applauded the latest round of funding for the government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, worth $3.9 million. 

Safer Steps Forward

The money will help fund 14 heavy vehicle safety projects currently in the works from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, the country’s independent heavy vehicle authority. Of the planned initiatives, five are being spearheaded by ATA member associations, including the Western Roads Federation, the Tasmanian Transport Association, the Queensland Trucking Association and Port of Brisbane, the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association, and Transafe WA.

The projects that are receiving funding cover a range of initiatives, including creating CoR (Chain of Responsibility) best practices guidelines for saleyard and livestock transport applications, investigating a handful of heavy vehicle safety measures to implement around ports, the building of a roadside effluent disposal facility for livestock carriers, and a proposal for improving safety in and around cranes and lifting equipment.

A Vote Of Confidence

According to ATA Chair Geoff Crouch, “Heavy vehicle safety is everyone’s responsibility and the No. 1 priority, so it’s excellent to receive the support of Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and the NHVR for these life-saving initiatives.” Crouch says the funding will also determine how the ATA conducts its upcoming national road safety campaign.
