Refuse collection and municipal equipment manufacturer Bucher Municipal recently chose the Iveco Eurocargo ML160 to be the truck platform for its new MaxPowa V65t truck-mounted sweeper. The Eurocargo was selected for its safety and emission performance, which comply with the upcoming Australian Design Rule (ADR) changes.
While Bucher Municipal has previously used Iveco’s ACCO, Stralis, and Eurocargo models for some of its refuse compactors, this marks the first time the company has used an Iveco model for a street sweeper in Australia.
"A move from Euro 5 to Euro 6 emission standards, along with the mandatory introduction of Autonomous Emergency Braking, ruled out the two cab chassis that we had been using," says Marcus Hughes, Bucher Municipal marketing manager – Oceania Region. "We began an exhaustive process to find a replacement chassis and found that the latest-generation Eurocargo ML160, not only met the new ADR requirements but offered other benefits in the application compared to what we'd used previously."
Keeping Up With Regulations
The Eurocargo is compliant with Euro 6 Step E guidance for reduced cold-start emissions and stricter particulate matter limits. The model’s latest engines are also compatible with second-generation paraffinic biofuels, such as HVO and XTL, that meet standards EN 15940 and EN 590, including B7 biodiesel blend.
Introduced in September 2015, Euro 6 reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter from diesel vehicles, improving air quality and public health. The Australian government announced plans to include Euro 6 regulations as part of updates to the Australian Design Rules.
Power, Comfort & Safety
The ML 160 generates 250 horsepower and 850 newton-metres of torque, and is equipped with a ZF 8-speed fully automatic transmission optimised for start-and-stop sweeping and low speeds. The Eurocargo's 3690-millimetre wheelbase makes it easy to manoeuvre through city streets, and the ergonomic cab ensures drivers work in comfort.
"The wheelbase is shorter than what we've used before, and this gives us a better turning circle and improved manoeuvrability, especially when working in tighter areas such as cul-de-sacs and inner-city laneways; it also provides better access into the kerb," Hughes says.
"Other highlights of the Eurocargo for us are the dual air-suspended ISRI seats provides a smooth and comfortable ride for the driver. As a company, we've had experience with Eurocargo as a TMS in Europe, and this also gave us the confidence to choose the platform for Australia and New Zealand."
The Eurocargo range is packed with safety features, including the autonomous emergency braking system, lane departure warning, advanced driver assistance system, LED daytime running lamps, and an emergency stop signal that pulses the taillights under heavy braking.
