NSW heavy vehicle checking stations
Heavyvehicles over 8 tonne gross vehicle mass may be stopped and inspected to ensuresafety and road standards are being met as well as driver compliance with roadtransport laws. Heavy vehicle safetystations are a part of the Roads and Maritime Services on-road enforcementprogram and are located along major transport routes. This program alsoincludes a combination of targeted and random roadside and mobile enforcements, supported by the Safe-T-cam network.
There areeight heavy vehicle safety stations around NSW including; Mount Boyce (GreatWestern Highway), Mount White (M1 Pacific Motorway), Marulan (Hume Highway), 12Mile Creek (Pacific Highway), Chinderah (Pacific Highway), Pine Creek (PacificHighway), Bell (Bell s Line of Road), and Kankool (New England Highway). The firstfour are automated, the latter, manual.
Automated Stations
The busieststations have been equipped with automated screening lanes, which mainly selectvehicles with either poor compliance history. The driver is signaled towardsthe appropriate lane and if a compliance check is required, a direction sign isgiven to the driver to enter the station. Automated stations use Weigh in Motion, Safe-T-Cam and Truckscantechnology to perform checks including; gross mass, axle mass, vehicle height, speed, tailgating, registration status, defect status, and more. If an anomalyis detected, the vehicle may be directed into the station for further checks, otherwise, they are directed back to the highway.
Manual Stations
Vehicles areselected based on a preliminary visual check either as part of a targetedoperation or randomly at stations without the automated facilities. Truckscantechnology is consequently used to check registration status, defect status, valid vehicle configuration for roads, Safe-T-Cam sightings for driver fatigueand driver s license and work diary.
It simportant for Truckers to abide by compliance regulations to ensure theyoperate legally and safely. Failing to comply by standards could placesignificant risk on other roads users, infrastructure and the environment. Be ateam player and get your heavy vehicle checked at a safety station whenrequired.
