IVECO Australia brings more horsepower to its INTERNATIONAL ProStar Truck Line

Posted On: Wednesday, 7 February 2018

More power is always welcome in the trucking industry. The combination of horsepower and torque opens vehicles up to a wider range of potential use cases, and they also make it possible to haul heavier loads over more demanding terrain in general. This is why IVECO Australia is adding a new power rating to its INTERNATIONAL ProStar truck models.

The new configuration offers 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 2,050 pound-foot (2,779 newton-meters) torque and joins the 550-horsepower (410-kilowatt) and 1,850-pound-foot (2,508-newton-meter) torque model to give customers more options. This new addition came about because INTERNATIONAL was getting requests for and interest in a potential 600-horsepower ProStar to accompany the 550-horsepower model, and that interest just so happened to align with plans the company already had in place. However, INTERNATIONAL wasn’t the only part involved, as Cummins teamed up with the company to get the extra power by fine-tuning the existing ProStar 15-litre Cummins X15 engine.

    Partnering Up To Meet Demands

In addition to simply working to make the engine more powerful, INTERNATIONAL and Cummins South Pacific also made sure that the truck itself would be able to withstand the unique conditions you’ll find throughout Australia’s landscape. The companies had to build a full production model and then go out and test it in real-world conditions to make sure it was up to the task. Fortunately, and expectedly, the truck performed well and lived up to the standards Cummins has for heavy haul operations in Australia.

All of this hard work also led to some extra benefits you’ll get from the 600-horsepower version that you might not necessarily get with the 550-horsepower entry in the ProStar line. For example, the 600-horsepower engine lets you stay in higher gear for an extended period of time thanks to its higher torque rating. But even though these two models have some slight differences to them, they do both come with same options from INTERNATIONAL in terms of features, which are all designed to give operators more choices in customizing their trucks. Both ProStar models come in day cab, extended cab, sleeper cab, and tipper configurations, and have the option for the standard Eaton 18-speed transmission or the UltraShift Plus 18-speed automated manual transmission.

    More On IVECO Australia

IVECO Trucks Australia is a wholly owned subsidiary of the CNH Industrial Group. The company, previously under the names International Harvester and International Trucks, has been operating in Australia in some capacity since 1902. IVECO’s main manufacturing plant is located in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, and has built over 230,000 bus and truck chassis over the past 50-plus years.

    Cummins X15

INTERNATIONAL and Cummins South Pacific worked together to retool the Cummins X15 engine to hit the target of 600 horsepower and 2,050 pound-foot (2,779 newton-meters) torque.

    INTERNATIONAL ProStar

There is now a 550- and 600-horsepower engine option for the INTERNATIONAL ProStar line, but both are available in day cab, extended cab, sleeper cab, and tipper configurations.
