Mercedes Benz unveils newly updated Sprinter series

Mercedes-Benz Vans recently revealed its newly designed Sprinter series, which the manufacturer has updated over past models in just about every conceivable way. In a press release, Mercedes-Benz emphasized the importance of not only focusing on one or two areas, but rather to rethink the entire package and how all of its separate components come together to form a solid whole. Ultimately, what it came up with was a line of vans that is adaptable, both safe and functional, able to support larger loads more easily, and absolutely packed to the gills with connected technologies.

Versatility at its best

According to Mercedes-Benz, there are up to 1,734 possible Sprinter configurations depending on your choice of powertrain, cab, body type and length, cargo space height, and other facets. What this ultimately means is that the new Sprinter series can serve even more industries than previous models. Buyers can configure the Sprinter for local deliveries, construction work, passenger transport, or even for use as ambulances. There’s also a Sprinter that comes with what essentially a truck bed, so it can be used for landscaping or as a general work truck.

Power & performance

In keeping with its focus on versatility and adaptability, Mercedes-Benz also made a new Sprinter model with front-wheel drive. It adds 50 more kilograms of payload capacity than the rear-wheel drive alternative and has a lower rear edge that makes it much easier to load cargo. Mercedes-Benz even redesigned the rear doors so that they open wider for that same purpose. In addition to front-wheel drive and loading-friendly changes, the new Sprinter series also comes with the option for a 9-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission.

Comfort & safety

One thread that runs through the entire fabric of the new Sprinter line is the idea of making things easier for the vehicle’s operator. The cab itself is ergonomically designed and comes with many creature comforts, including keyless start, an improved air conditioning system, and more. In terms of safety features, Mercedes-Benz included DISTRONIC radar-based cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, active brake assist, and even a rain sensor that automatically triggers the windscreen wipers when necessary. All of these systems work together to keep the driver protected.

Connectivity features

The Sprinter series sports the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) multimedia system, which features a 260-millimeter (10.25-inch) HD touchscreen that serves as the command center for the vehicle’s connectivity solutions. It has voice control, automated recommendations (if, for example, you’re low on fuel and need to find a filling station), and the ability to connect devices to an internet connection built into the vehicle.

What’s most impressive, though, about the new Sprinter line’s connected technologies, is how they can be used for business purposes, and specifically to aid fleet management. The system is designed to work as part of the Internet of Things (IoT), which means messages are continually directed back and forth not only between different parts of the vehicle, but also between the vehicle and a fleet manager, if desired. This allows companies to monitor their vehicles and drivers to help with predictive maintenance, rerouting, and more.
