Four trucking tips for life on the road
Four trucking tips for life on the road
Long-haul truck driving can be a stressful occupation, but by planning ahead and developing a routine, you can embrace the freedom driving a truck while staying happy and healthy. Here are some tips that will help make life on the road a little easier.
Adjust your seat position
Proper ergonomics will help you avoid chronic pain and other issues. It all starts with adjusting your seat. Do this so that you are the proper distance away from your steering wheel and pedals, and at the correct height so that your knees are just at an angle. Make sure your back is up against the seat for lumbar support, as well. Shift around in your seat as often as you can while maintaining proper ergonomics so that your body isn’t stuck in the same position for hours on end.
Perform stretches at rest stops & stoplights
Use your steering wheel to stretch out your wrists and hands. Grab the bottom of your chair with one hand and lean your head to the opposite side to stretch out your neck. Put both arms outstretched to the side and arch your back to stretch it as well as your neck, shoulders, and arms. When out of the truck, take the opportunity to stretch your legs and lower back with toe touches, lunges, and other stretches.
Develop a rest stop routine
Try to do the same basic routine every time you hit up a rest stop. For example, do your stretches, get a drink of water, go the restroom, walk around for 10 minutes, grab a quick snack, recheck your route to make sure you’re on schedule, and do a quick check on your truck to make sure everything is working properly.
Visit a chiropractor if necessary
Whether it’s in an office setting or a truck cab, sitting for long stretches of time can take a toll on your body. You can work with a chiropractor in your home town or take advantage of chiropractors that are setting up shop at truck stops in order to address this industry-wide issue. Chiropractic offices will not only help with adjustments, but can also give advice on diets and eating plans to help alleviate issues like back, neck, leg, and shoulder pain as well as other issues that originate with the spine.
