How to prepare for a long-haul drive
Travelling over long distances requires a bit of forward thinking, especially if you’re driving a truck cross-country. It’s crucial to reach your destination on time and planning ahead is a great way to make a long-haul trip go more smoothly. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you leave on your trip.
Perform a truck check
Check your tyre pressure and make sure the tread is in good shape. Check your fluid levels, including oil, coolant, power steering fluid, etc. Make sure head and tail lights are working in addition to other exterior and interior lighting. Test your windshield wipers and check the fluid. If you’re towing a trailer, confirm that the connection is secure. Don’t forget to get all of your connected services, like GPS navigation and telematics, up-to-date.
Avoid fatigue
Battling driver fatigue starts with some common sense practices, like following a balanced diet plan, staying hydrated, avoiding heavy meals or foods with too much sugar, and keeping healthy snacks on-hand. Take frequent breaks and don’t skip them. Take every opportunity to get out of the cab to walk around or do some stretches. Listen to music, podcasts, and other audio that will hold your attention but not distract you from the road. Although it’s easier said than done, try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
Plan out your route ahead of time
Use route-planning software to know exactly where truck stops, repair shops, restaurants, gas stations, and other amenities are along your route. Use apps and other technologies to keep track of road conditions, especially if you’re traveling over hundreds of miles where weather patterns and general climate may change. Also, if you’re traveling along a route that doesn’t have many amenities, then make sure you pack everything you need in your truck in case of an emergency. This is especially important for traveling in remote areas.
