The Volvo ATA Safety Truck Heads To Warwick For Road Safety Week
This week, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) recently participated in the fourth annual Queensland Road Safety Week, whose theme was “Speaking Up For Road Safety—Road Rules Refresher.” The ATA sent a team and its Volvo ATA Safety Truck to Warwick for the event, where they joined representatives of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, the Queensland Trucking Association, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, the Queensland police department, and TMR officials for a Queensland Road Safety Week Heavy Vehicle Operator engagement event.
Positive Engagement
The event presented trucking operators from across the country with road safety information. The ATA describes the Volvo Safety Truck appearing at the event as a “mobile education centre” designed for road safety education programs, trucking industry-led community events, and other public events.
Melissa Weller, ATA safety and skills advisor, says the event gives operators a platform to share their views about road safety, ask questions, and inform the ATA how its network of member associations can help them. “The event is all about brushing up on the road rules and having a chat about safety issues in a relaxed and informal environment,” Weller says.
Educating Future Drivers
Following the Heavy Vehicle Operator event, the Volvo Safety Truck was scheduled to visit Warwick State High School for an event with students. “The core focus of the Volvo ATA Safety Truck is to educate young drivers and future drivers about how to share the road safely by staying out of truck blind spots, travelling at a safe distance around trucks, and being aware of the space needed when turning,” Weller says.
