Stephen Gray Transport Acquires Fuso Shogun 360 To Help Meet Strong Demand

Tasmanian hauler Stephen Gray Transport recently added a new Fuso Shogun 360 to its fleet of four trucks serving Burnie, Devonport, and Launceston. Gray chose the Shogun for its efficiency and durability. (Photo courtesy of Fuso.)

Smithton-based Stephen Gray Transport started 40 years ago when Stephen Gray and his wife Wendy acquired a $5,000 secondhand truck. Since then the company has grown to a fleet of four late-model trucks operating from the far northeast coast of Tasmania servicing Burnie, Devonport, and Launceston. The most recent addition to the fleet, a brand-new Fuso Shogun 360, hauls everything from refrigerated cargo to containers as well as cars and tractors.

    Efficient Power

The truck, purchased from Burnie CJD, is fitted with a tilt-slider body from CTE Custom Truck Equipment in Dandenong, Victoria. The tipping tray body enables the truck to handle an array of cargo including 20-foot containers, telehandlers, cars, and more. Gray opted for a 6x2 truck, which he says is more efficient. “Choosing a single rear axle rather than a tandem increases my payload by around 600 to 700 kilograms, which is a lot,” Gray says. “It also reduces wear and saves fuel, so it makes a lot of sense for me.”

The Shogun 360 is equipped with a 7.7-litre six-cylinder engine that generates 360 horsepower (268 kilowatts) and 1,400 newton-metres (1,032 pounds-foot) of torque. The engine is compliant with the Euro 6-equivalent JPNLT emissions standard, exceeding the Euro 5 standard that is currently mandated in Australia. The automated manual transmission features a crawler mode and smooth, quick shifting.

Gray is very impressed with the Shogun 360 so far. “Ten out of ten,” he says. “I wouldn’t hesitate to get another one.” (Photo courtesy of Fuso.)

    Comfort & Safety

The Shogun’s cab is designed for easy access with driver and passenger doors that can open 90 degrees with grab rails on either side. Meter clusters on the dash and switches on the steering wheel keep the driver’s eyes on the road and an air suspension seat and ergonomic design provide comfort.

A full suite of safety features comes standard on the Shogun 360, including the Advanced Emergency Braking System that uses camera and radar camera technology to sense pedestrians and stop automatically if the driver does not respond to an audible warning. The truck also has a lane departure warning system, an electronic stability program, and Active Sideguard Assist, which alerts the driver to the presence of a vehicle, cyclist, or other obstruction in blind spots during left turns and lane changes.

Gray is very impressed with the Shogun 360 so far. “Ten out of ten,” he says. “I wouldn’t hesitate to get another one.”
