Daf CF 340 FAD Compactor Trucks Win Drivers’ Hearts At Melbourne’s WM Waste Management Services

Hard waste collection company WM Waste Management Services of Boronia, Victoria, chose Australian-built vehicles as it recently expanded its fleet of compactor trucks. The family-owned business purchased four new Daf CF 340 FAD 8x4 models with Superior Pak rear-loading compactor units from PACCAR dealer Hallam Truck Centre.

The new Daf trucks came equipped with a PACCAR MX-11 Euro 6 engine and an Allison 3200 six-speed automatic gearbox. PACCAR Australia engineers and assembles the bodybuilder-friendly trucks at its facility in Bayswater.

    Low Tare, More Payload

Candice Fecondo, Hard Waste Operations Manager for WM Waste, enumerates a list of features that factored into the company’s decision to acquire the new Daf CF 340 FAD trucks.

“Big trucks like these are not always easy to handle in cities, but they cope well,” she says. “Their turning circle is pretty standout for a twin-steer, which is great for courts and other tight areas.”

In addition to its manoeuvrability, Fecondo says the CF 340 FAD has a suspension that is not only capable on rough terrain, but also makes operation more comfortable on a long work shift.

“They go everywhere, from Toorak to the Yarra Valley and beyond,” says Fecondo. “I’ve found we can take these trucks across all terrains. They’re great on the highway, great on dirt roads, and great on city streets. When you’re fully loaded and you hit a bump, that can really throw a truck around. But these DAFs just glide across them—you feel in control.”

At the same time, the CF 340’s low tare weight edition pays dividends in productivity. “PACCAR has re-engineered these chassis to be about 500 kilograms lighter, which really helps increase our payload capacity when you add that up over three or four loads per day,” Fecondo says.

    Driver Preferences

WM Waste’s new CF 340 FAD trucks also include a few driver-favourite Daf features. “The side camera is also great for tight streets, allowing that extra visibility on the blind side of the cabin,” says Fecondo. “Our drivers really love that feature.”

Another popular Daf perk is the Driver Performance feature available with the PACCAR Connect telematics system. Driver Performance evaluates operators’ driving style and behaviours, producing a detailed score for each. “Our drivers treat it like a bit of a challenge; they have a sense of competition about it,” Fecondo says. “They love going for the best score, and it’s helping them drive more efficiently.”

Driver Performance also gives each operator tips on ways to improve their score through more efficient driving habits, which lower fuel and maintenance costs. “It provides live feedback to the driver through the dashboard as well,” says Fecondo. “It will let them know when they’re driving too hard, advises when they should be anticipating braking events, and over-idling in order to save fuel. We’re noticing the difference with our fuel bill.”

    The Daf CF Range

Daf produces CF trucks as prime movers as well as chassis suitable for work as tippers, tankers, and concrete pumpers. The CF comes with two to four axles in 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x4, and 8x4 low tare configurations. The versatile, fuel-efficient model is available with a day cab, sleeper cab, or Space Cab.

Euro 6-compliant engine options for the CF include PACCAR’s MX-11 and MX-13 six-cylinders, which are available in power levels of 340 to 530 horsepower (250 to 390 kilowatts). Transmission choices include ZF TraXon 12- or 16-speed automated gearboxes as well as the Allison 3200 six-speed automatic in WM Waste’s new trucks.

Safety and assistance technologies available in the CF include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, vehicle stability control, and front and rear disc brakes including antilock and advanced emergency braking systems.
