Team Global Express Acquires 24 Fuso eCanters For Carbon Reduction Plan
Team Global Express (TGE), a transport and logistics provider serving Australia and New Zealand, recently reached a deal for 24 all-electric zero-emission Fuso eCanters as part of a carbon reduction effort in Sydney. In addition to the eCanters, TGE’s five-year electric truck trial includes the installation of 63 chargers and a large battery system to bank the energy from the 400-kilowatt-hour solar power generation system the company installed at its Bungarribee depot in Sydney’s Eastern Creek. Funding for the project was provided in part through a $20.1 million Australian Renewable Energy Agency grant. The eCanter was chosen because it is the first electric truck from an original equipment manufacturer in Australia and the only one in its class to come with active safety features such as the Advanced Emergency Braking System and the Lane Departure Warning System. TGE also has three Fuso eCanters currently operating in its New Zealand fleet.
“We are thrilled to partner with Team Global Express for this exciting project, which represents a dramatic step forward on the journey towards zero-emission freight transport in Australia,” says Daniel Whitehead, Daimler Truck Australia Pacific president and CEO. “This ambitious initiative shows what our industry can achieve with positive government policies and agencies like ARENA. We have no doubt this groundbreaking project will provide inspiration for many operators in Australia and are pleased the Fuso eCanter has been recognised as the best truck for this role.”
The Fuso eCanter
The eCanter uses six liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries with 82.8 kWh of electricity feeding a permanent magnet synchronous motor and produces 135 kW (181 horsepower) and 390 newton-metres (288 pounds-foot) of torque. With zero carbon emissions and near-silent operation, the eCanter is designed for work in high-density urban areas. The electric truck can quick charge in under 90 minutes and has regenerative braking to supplement the charge. When loaded to its absolute max gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 7.49 tonnes (8.25 U.S. tons), the eCanter has a range of 100 kilometres (62 miles). The truck also comes equipped with an Electronic Stability Program, dual airbags, and pedestrian detection.
“Today is an important step toward progressing Australia’s pathway to reduce scope 1 emissions and secure a net zero future,” says Team Global Express Group CEO, Christine Holgate. “This is the first project of its scale in Australian logistics, as such we are in a unique position to work closely with ARENA to share the knowledge we gain and provide this vital information for the benefit of the entire transport and logistics sector.”
