JM Pastoral Upgrades From Fuso Fighter—To Another Fuso Fighter
Over a number of years, Mckyla Hull of JM Pastoral drove her old Fuso Fighter more than 800,000 kilometres (497,097 miles), moving cows, sheep, and goats all across New South Wales. “It was a great truck that never let me down and it also went like a scolded cat which was nice,” Hull says. “We didn’t have to touch the engine or gearbox or even change a clutch, but given its mileage I didn’t want to take the chance that it would give up out in some really remote location.”
To that end, Hull recently took delivery of a new Fuso Fighter fitted with JM Welding 7.3-metre (24-foot) single-deck, anti-bruise stock crate.
New Fighter In The Ring
JM Pastoral’s new Fighter is a 1627 model with a 270-horsepower (201-kilowatt), six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The 7.5-litre engine produces 784 newton-metres (578 pounds-foot) of torque, ideal for hauling sometimes heavy livestock loads. As equipped, the new Fighter can transport around 80 to 100 sheep, 35 smaller cows (under 200 kilograms/441 pounds), or 18 larger cows. The JM Welding stock crate also offers in-floor drainage, a drop ramp, and a rear-slide gate. The Fighter 1627 has a nine-speed manual transmission, which Hull selected to maintain a simple gearing that’s easy to fix.
Fighter Range
Fuso offers the Fighter in a selection of medium-duty options, with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 7.5 to 20 tonnes (8.27 to 22 U.S. tons). Four- and six-cylinder engine options are available, as are 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 axle configurations. The Fighter also comes with a manufacturer warranty that covers the truck for five years or 350,000 km, whichever comes first.
