Australia Post Trials First Volvo FL Electric
Australia Post is putting its first Volvo Electric truck through the paces as part of a six-month trial. The Electric FL runs on four batteries with a total capacity of 266 kilowatt-hours, giving it a 300-kilometre (186-mile) operating range, depending on the application. The truck’s all-electric motor delivers 130 kilowatts (174 horsepower) and 425 newton-metres (313 pounds-foot) of torque. Volvo rates the FL Electric’s payload at 5,500 kilograms (12,125 pounds).
“The truck has been in service for a couple of months now and is performing well,” says Australia Post Divisional General Manager South, James Dixon. “We will continue to push electric vehicles into our fleet where we can to help reduce emissions wherever we can.”
Volvo Electric Delivers
Available with a day cab or short sleeper cab, the FL Electric is a 4x2 rigid with a gross vehicle weight up to 16 tonnes (17.6 U.S. tons). Volvo says FL Electric is ideal for urban deliveries, thanks in part to a full slate of safety systems, including autonomous emergency braking, that actively assist drivers to reduce the chance of accidents. Should a crash occur, operators can rest assured that the FL Electric is certified for the rigorous Swedish BO510 crash rating that surpasses European crash test standards.
“It’s very rewarding seeing these vehicles go into service after so much hard work ensuring they are the right fit for both our market and the applications they are being put into,” says Volvo Group Australia E-mobility Manager Tim Camilleri. “These vehicles are proving themselves day in and day out around the globe.”
Heavy-Duty Electrics On The Way
Volvo Trucks Australia has offered medium-duty battery-electric trucks since 2021, and the manufacturer recently was awarded the right to validate its heavy-duty electric trucks on Queensland roads at weights of up to 42,500 kg (93,696 lbs). Driver assistance and safety features on these heavy-duty electric trucks include blind spot detection, collision warning with emergency braking, lane keeping assist, passenger corner cameras, and underrun protection.
