Isuzu & UD Trucks Partnering On Joint Exhibition At Japan Mobility Show 2023
Isuzu Motors Limited and UD Trucks Corporation recently announced they will partner on an exhibition at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo. The joint exhibition, a first between the two brands, will showcase innovations under development for the future of transportation. The booth’s theme is innovation and will have a Future Tunnel and Future Cube in the middle with displays on the left and right. The exhibits will include carbon-neutral solutions, products to aid in fixing labour shortages, and two new prototypes yet to be announced.
Eliminating Emissions
Among the exhibits in the carbon-neutral solutions display will be touchscreens with animation to introduce visitors to Isuzu’s plant equipment and remanufacturing technologies for the restoration of used vehicles and the development of battery-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles as well as representative vehicles for these alternatives to gas power.
The Giga Fuel Cell. The fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck will make its public debut at the show. A joint project between Honda Motor Co. and Isuzu, the Giga Fuel Cell is fuelled by hydrogen and the companies say it is ideal for hauling heavy loads across long distances and long hours of operation. Vehicle testing on public roads is currently underway. Isuzu hopes to bring a production model to market in 2027.
The ELF EV. The ELF EV is Isuzu’s first mass-produced battery-electric vehicle. The light-duty truck has the same platform as the diesel ELF line (the N-Series in some markets) and comes in a wide range of variations and configurations. The ELF EV will be introduced to markets outside of Japan in stages.
EVision. The EVision program helps Isuzu’s customers reach carbon neutrality with the initial feasibility phase of the introduction of commercial BEVs and addressing any issues related to them. It also quantifies the benefits of carbon reduction and recommends other improvements to help customers create a plan for adding electric vehicles.
Meeting Industry Needs
Booming e-commerce and a shortage of drivers have put a strain on the trucking industry. To aid the industry, Isuzu is working on truck designs that can be driven with a standard driving license as well as autonomous options.
The ELFmio. The light-duty ELFmio can be driven with a standard driver’s licence. It has a spacious interior and a small turning radius for a passenger car-like driving experience.
The Quon GW 6×4. The heavy-duty fuel-efficient truck has the 12-speed electronically controlled ESCOT-VII automatic transmission, UD Active Steering, and disc brakes.
The Quester GWE 6×4. The heavy-duty truck designed for emerging markets is Euro 5 emissions standard-compliant and is equipped with the UD Selective Catalytic Reduction system. The Quester was launched 10 years ago and is currently in use in 50 countries.
Autonomous Driving
The Fujin test vehicle will be on display to showcase Isuzu’s autonomous driving technologies. The technology is being developed to address driver shortages and safety issues. Isuzu anticipates a future with buses operating specific routes and trucks operating on pre-determined points within work sites.
