Volvo FL Electric Truck With Gen2 Battery Packs Make Australian Debut At DHL
Delivery company DHL Supply Chain has become the first Australian customer of Volvo’s FL Electric 4x2 battery-electric rigid truck with new, second-generation battery packs. The Gen2 batteries supply more driving range, giving DHL’s new medium-duty delivery trucks with tautliner van bodies a 300-kilometre (186-mile) range whilst carrying eight full-sized pallets. The maximum range for the Gen2 Volvo FL Electric is 450 km (280 mi).
Drivers Tout Volvo FL Electric’s Comfort Features
DHL’s new Gen2 FL Electric curtainsiders are based at its western Sydney supply chain campus. As the delivery company has already trialled and rolled out the FL Electric in Europe, it was able to put the vehicles to work in Australia straight away.
“This addition to the fleet is kinder to the environment and is a better place for DHL Supply Chain staff to work,” says Volvo Trucks Vice President Gary Bone. “The addition of Volvo FL electric trucks is a simple way for us to transition to battery-electric technology, with a useful driving range, proven reliability, and an intuitive driving experience that will resonate with our staff.
“As well as being nimble, safe, and a comfortable place for DHL Supply Chain staff to work, the Volvo FL delivers tangible benefits to the climate, as well as everybody who lives and works in the areas in which they operate,” Bone continues. “Drivers’ feedback on these trucks is overwhelmingly positive in terms of comfort and ergonomics and reduced fatigue levels.”
“Updating our fleet to zero emissions vehicles is a priority in Australia and it combines well with the measures we’re taking to reduce our carbon footprint across our operations,” says DHL Supply Chain CEO Steve Thompsett. DHL has announced a target of 60% electric vehicles in its last-mile fleet by 2030.
Gen2 Volvo FL Electric Specifications
The Volvo FL Electric is a 2-axle, two-wheel-drive model suitable for urban transportation tasks such as deliveries, including at night because of its quiet operation. It has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 16 tonnes (17.6 U.S. tons) and a gross combination weight (GCW) of 16.7 t (18.4 U.S. t). Volvo sells the vehicle with either a day cab or comfort cab and offers an option for easy bodybuilding.
The FL Electric’s 600-volt motor can transmit up to 130 kilowatts (175 horsepower) of continuous power through a 2-speed transmission. It empowers the vehicle to haul a payload of up to 5,500 kilograms (12,125 pounds). Lighter loads extend the FL Electric’s driving range, and vice-versa. The truck has an innovative traction control system and air suspension, and is available with an electric power take-off (PTO).
When equipped with four 66-kilowatt-hour battery packs, the FL Electric has a full recharging time of 2.3 hours on 150 kW of DC power or 16.8 hours on 22 kW of AC. During operation, a regenerative braking system recharges the FL’s batteries a bit every time the truck decelerates. Volvo offers service and support packages for charging, route and range planning, battery monitoring, and other aspects of operation.
