Direct Collect Makes Recycling Easier Than Ever With Help From Isuzu NPR 65/45-190 Trucks

Recycling initiative Direct Collect began operations in Adelaide last year to make recycling easier by offering direct home and business pickup. South Australia has a decades-long scheme in which anyone who discards a recyclable container forfeits the right to its associated refund. Direct Collect simplifies the process of getting that refund.

Direct Collect provides customers with a blue bin for 10-cent refundable bottles, cans, and containers, which the company then collects once the bin is full and hauls to a recycling centre. The contents of the bin are then counted, and the refund is either placed directly into the customer’s account or donated to charity partners such as OzHarvest, FoodBank, and the Sammy D Foundation. To perform collections, Direct Collect relies on their fleet of four Isuzu NPR 65/45-190 trucks fitted with custom-built trailers and trays with tailgate lifters and side cages.

“We thought, why go to a bottle yard and queue up when someone could come to you?” says Direct Collect co-founder and Manager Justin Castelluzzo. “Whenever you fill the bins up, you let us know on the app and we simply collect the bin, leave you a fresh one and within a few days, the money goes either straight to your account or straight to your charity or organisation of choice.”

“We have four identical trucks, they’re fantastic…they’re easy to use, they look great, and we haven’t had any problems with them,” says Direct Collect co-founder and Manager Justin Castelluzzo. (Photo courtesy of Isuzu.)

The NPR 65/45-190 has a towing capacity of 4,500 kilograms (9,920 pounds) and a gross combined mass (GCM) as high as 10,000 kg (22,050 lbs), ensuring the truck won’t be driving overweight. Powered by a 188-horsepower (140-kilowatt) 4-cylinder, 16-valve Euro V-compliant Isuzu 4HK1-TCC engine rated for 513 newton-metres (378 pounds-foot) of torque. The truck is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

The NPR range has Isuzu’s Advanced Driver Assistance System, a network of safety features using sensors and cameras to protect both the driver and other road users. The system includes Advanced Emergency Braking, a Distance Warning System, a Traffic Movement Warning, Electronic Stability Control, and a Lane Departure Warning.

“We have four identical trucks, they’re fantastic . . . they’re easy to use, they look great, and we haven’t had any problems with them,” says Castelluzzo.
