Revolution Haulage Queensland (RHQ) owner Scott Williams attended the Brisbane Truck Show last May seeking new trucks for the Cooper Plains-based refrigerated goods delivery company he started in 2015. The effort proved fruitful. After seeing another Queensland firm’s Iveco S-Way AS 550 6x4 prime movers in full company livery, he was motivated to purchase two of his own.

    Excellent Fuel Efficiency

RHQ’s S-Ways are the first trucks from a European truck brand in its 10-vehicle fleet. Each pulls a single trailer, drawing power from a Cursor 13 12.9-litre Euro6 Step E engine rated for 550 horsepower (410 kilowatts) and 2,500 newton-metres (1,844 pounds-foot) of torque at 1,000 to 1,605 rpm. (The S-Way is also available with Cursor 9 or Cursor 11 power plants.) Williams says the engines deliver generous power and impressive fuel economy.

“Although the trucks are rated at 70-tonne gross vehicle mass, in our single-trailer setup we’re almost always running at 42.5 t,” says Williams. “The trucks are still new, and fuel efficiency is getting better and better by the week.”

    Extended Transmission Life

Each truck also employs a 16-speed Hi-Tronix Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Iveco says the transmission provides category-leading technology, a best-in-class torque-to-weight ratio, fast gear changes, and the capability to efficiently select the correct ratio for the present road and load conditions. Compared to other AMTs, Iveco says, the Hi-Tronix ATM can achieve an extended life of up to 80%.

“Increasingly, we’re seeing drivers showing a preference for automated transmissions,” says Williams. “As well as providing a more relaxed operating environment, not as many new drivers are choosing to get their full non-synchro manual licenses, so the S-Way is perfect.”

    Comfort & Convenience Provided

RHQ drivers use the trucks to transport goods from Brisbane to Adelaide and then return to Cooper Plains. The trek finds them regularly traveling over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) while spending about a week on the road. Williams says cabin space and creature comforts that make the trips more comfortable factored heavily in his decision.

“For added comfort and convenience, we’ve equipped the trucks with the optional microwave along with a CustomAir bunk cooler, making for an even nicer environment,” he says. “The drivers absolutely love the trucks and say they provide everything a driver would want.”

    The Iveco S-Way Prime Mover

S-Way prime movers are available in 4x2 or 6x4 configurations and four wheelbase lengths from 3,200 to 3,650 millimetres (126 to 144 inches). Cab options include Active Day, Active Time, and Active Space, with the latter being the largest.

RHQ acquired the extended 5-year or 1,000,000-km (621,350-mile) warranty for its trucks in place of the standard 3-year or 750,000-km (466,000-mi) warranty. The trucks are achieving service intervals of 75,000 km (46,600 miles), which Williams says is especially impressive compared to other trucks in RHQ’s fleet.
