Scania Truck’s Spacious Cab & Bigger Bunk Win Over Boyle’s Livestock Transport
It didn’t take long for the drivers at Boyle’s Livestock Transport to fall for the spacious cab of the Scania V8 cabover truck. The Mepunga, Victoria-based company was using a Scania 770 hp V8 demonstrator on loan and was quickly swayed by the truck’s amenities, prompting Boyle’s to purchase an R 660 V8 cabover fitted with the CR23 extended cab.
“After the demo drive, I needed a crowbar to get the driver out of the V8,” says Joel Haberfield, owner of Boyle’s Livestock Transport. “He really appreciated the space in the cab, good liveability, lots of room, and the bigger bunk. Fuel efficiency is also important, as it’s at least 30% of costs. We reckon this Scania will do the job for us.”
The new Scania truck will cover approximately 220,000 kilometres (136,700 miles) per year hauling cattle, sheep, and feed across Australia.
Impressive Power & Safety
Boyle’s driver Stewart McKane was impressed by the power and torque of the V8 engine with 2.1 kilometres per litre out of the box compared to the 1.64 km/L his previous truck managed.
McKane also appreciated the Scania Opticruise gear changing. The Opticruise fully automated clutch control provides precise manoeuvring and smooth gear performance, aided by a wider, 14-gear spread and variable oil volume and oil spray function for better gear lubrication. The Opticruise gearbox has a PTO programme with nine performance steps and higher torque and gear ratio for lower engine speeds, lower noise levels, and reduced fuel consumption.
“The gearbox is just brilliant,” Stewart says. “I was driving a manual bonneted truck previously, but this automated gearbox is very well calibrated.”
The R 660 V8 provides excellent visibility from the front and side, a must for drivers moving through farm gates, and the LED lighting increases safety at night.
Luxury On The Road
McKane refers to the truck as “the Penthouse” and says it is loaded with features.
“The cab is very comfortable, and I am hopping out at the end of the day feeling very fresh,” McKane says. “The bunk is great, and I get seven hours of sleep no problem. The microwave in the storage bin above the screen is a far better location than behind the seats, because you’re not kneeing on the mattress with a hot bowl of soup in your hands. The twin under-bunk chillers are good too, you can have one as a fridge and one as a freezer.”
