Josie’s Transport’s Newest Iveco S-Way Prime Mover Won’t Be Its Last
Since 1974, Josie’s Transport vehicles have been a mainstay on the M1 Princes Highway between Geelong and Melbourne. Over the last 50 years, Josie’s has grown and expanded its services, operating a fleet of more than 100 vehicles including subcontractor trucks.
The newest additions to the fleet are two Iveco S-Way prime movers, one 550 AT and one 530 AT. The S-Ways replaced two older European trucks and while they are the first Iveco vehicles in the fleet, Transport Manager Rhys Rutland says they won’t be the last.
“After researching available models, we were impressed with the specification of the S-Ways and the flexibility they could provide our operation,” says Rutland. “We purchased the S-Way 550 AT early last year to use for single-trailer line-haul work, but being B-Double rated, we thought it would also be a great match for future 2-trailer work as it arises.”
Iveco S-Way Capabilities
Josie’s 550 AT has hauled a tautliner daily from Geelong to Dandenong, Melbourne for the last year. The 550 AT is equipped with Iveco’s 12.9-litre Euro 6 Step E-compliant engine, which is rated for 550 horsepower (405 kilowatts) and 2,500 newton-metres (1,844 pounds-foot) of torque at 1,000 to 1,600 rpm, and is equipped with the Hi-Tronix 16-speed automated manual transmission.
Impressed with the performance of the 550 AT, Josie’s added the 530 AT prime mover late last year. The 530 AT’s specs are like those of the 550 AT; the truck is rated for 530 HP (390 kW) and 2,400 N-m (1,770 lbf-ft) of torque at 950 rpm. Both trucks are fitted with aero kits and adjustable turntables to work with an array of trailers.
In addition to general freight work, the 530 AT also operates in regional Victoria where it regularly hauls mobile blood donation trailers for the Red Cross, just one of the ways Josie’s Transport has diversified.
Comfort & Safety In The S-Way
In the cab, drivers enjoy air-suspended, heated, 3-way adjustable seats, as well as a refrigerator-freezer and bunk curtains. The trucks also possess numerous safety features, including Iveco’s Electronic Stability Programme, Anti-lock Brake System, Lane Departure Warning System, Advanced Emergency Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, and more.
“At the end of the day, we just need trucks we can jump into that require low maintenance, low upkeep; you turn the key and we have the reliability of knowing we’re going to get from point A to point B and back safely, and not have any worries,” says Rutland. “The Iveco S-Ways are providing this for us.”
