Volvo Trucks Australia recently announced that a new, more powerful engine is coming this winter for its heavy-duty FH16 commercial truck. The new D17 engine with a 780-horsepower (582-kilowatt) maximum power tier will become available to Australian customers from July 2024.

Volvo launched the new Euro 6 D17 engine in Sweden in February. It will be available in the FH16 truck with power levels from 600 to 780 HP (447 to 582 kW). The company says each power rating of the new power plant is compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel.

“A world of possibilities has been built into this engine platform,” says Shayne Commons, Volvo Group Australia's director of product and performance. “Highly efficient drivetrains capable of using alternative fuels will be a key part of our path to net-zero emissions.”

    The D17 Engine’s Power & Torque

The Volvo FH16’s new 17-litre D17 engine will supplant the 16-L D16 motor, which has a similar architecture but a smaller cylinder bore diameter. Besides greater displacement, the new power plant has a new fuel injection system, low-friction cylinder liners, and wave-top pistons that enhance combustion.

With the new D17 engine, the FH16 will come in three power levels: a 600-HP (447-kW) edition with 3,000 newton-metres (2,213 pounds-foot) of torque, a 700-HP (522-kW) offering with 3,400 N-m (2,508 lbf-ft), and the 780-HP (582-kW) maximum power option with 3,800 N-m (2,803 lbf-ft) of torque. The new 780-HP power level summit compares very favourably to the outgoing D16 motor that tops out at 700 HP (522 kW) and 3,550-N-m (2,618 lbf-ft) of torque.

“More power gives us the option of gearing our trucks for more efficiency on highway; more torque means less gear changes and more top gear time,” says Commons. “However, for the person behind the wheel, the performance of the D17 engine in the new FH16 will impress. Driver feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, especially in regard to holding road speed in undulating terrain. Drivers will want to drive this FH16.”

The Volvo FH16—Volvo’s Most Powerful Truck

The FH16 is Volvo’s most powerful truck. The company recommends its rigid and tractor variants for heavy transport applications, such as in the forestry and timber industry and mining and quarry jobs. As a prime mover, the FH16 offers four sleeper cab options with one or two bunks. A lightweight 4x2 edition is also available.

Like other Volvo trucks, the FH16 benefits from a lengthy list of updated driver assistance and safety technologies. An Intelligent Speed Assist feature can inform the driver about the speed limit for the road they’re on based on the specific vehicle combination they’re driving.

Volvo also equips the truck with its Camer Monitor System, which replaces the side mirrors with cameras, giving the driver visibility into the FH16’s blind spots without obstructing the view to the side and forward.

In addition, Volvo offers fuel-saving systems and designs for the FH16, which can significantly reduce operating costs over time. Some examples are the advanced I-Shift automated transmission, I-See predictive cruise control with map-enabled gear selection, and the fuel-efficient I-Save drivetrain.
