Renault has announced a range of technical upgrades to its 2026 Trafic, a midsize commercial van popular for passenger transport, trade use, and cargo applications.
Upgrades include a new 9-speed torque-converter automatic transmission that Renault says delivers smoother gear shifts compared to the previous Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) gearbox, while achieving a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres (37.9 miles per gallon)—a reduction from the previous 6.5L/100 km (36.2 mpg). A 6-speed manual transmission is also available, depending on the variant.
Renault Australia General Manager Glen Sealey says the Trafic’s long driving range and long service intervals (30,000 km/18,641 mi or 12 months, whichever comes first) make the vehicle an attractive choice for businesses on the move.
“June is historically the biggest month of the year for commercial vehicle sales and, demonstrating our commitment to the Australian market, we have introduced a number of changes to the MY26 Renault Trafic lineup,” says Sealey. He adds that the Trafic “delivers less downtime in an industry where time is money. If a van is your tool of trade, we say the Renault Trafic is your best business partner.”
Trafic Upgrade Benefits
In addition to improved fuel efficiency, Renault increased the towing capacity to 2,500 kilograms (5,512 pounds) across the entire Trafic range, up from previous limits of 1,630 kg (3,594 lbs) for long-wheelbase and 1,680 kg (3,704 lbs) for short-wheelbase automatic variants.
Buyers of the 2026 Trafic Premium and Lifestyle versions will benefit from the addition of adaptive cruise control as a standard feature. The Pro and Premium also now include a noise-reducing, factory-fitted steel bulkhead with a glazed window and a middle-seat fold-down table with an upright document holder as standard. These features were previously available only as options with the Pro version.
Core Trafic Specifications
The 2026 Trafic lineup includes Lifestyle, Premium, and Pro trims, all available in a choice of six exterior colours. The Premium and Pro are offered in both short- and long-wheelbase configurations, while the Lifestyle is available in a Crew configuration for transporting additional passengers. Depending on the variant, the Trafic offers a payload capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes (1.32 U.S. tons) and a class-leading load length of up to 4.15 metres (13.6 feet), according to Renault.
All models are powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, updated for 2026 to meet Euro 6 emissions standards. Performance outputs remain unchanged at 167.6 horsepower (123 kilowatts) at 3,500 rpm and 380 newton-metres (280 pounds-foot) of torque at 1,500 rpm. An 80-L (21-gallon) fuel tank supplies the engine.
In addition to safety features such as driver attention monitoring, drowsiness alert, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and automatic low/high beam bi-LED reflector-style headlights, Renault offers option packs for various Trafic configurations. For example, the Premium variant offers Trade and Business packs that may include features such as an anti-slip floor, LED ceiling lights, factory-tinted rear windows, embedded navigation, and overspeed protection.
