Hamelex White Tippers score a big contract
Hamelex White, an Australian tipper truck manufacturer, recently announced that eight of its rigid and four of its axle dog tipper combinations are being tapped to work on a predominantly underground 33-kilometre motorway, as part of Sydney’s massive WestConnex infrastructure project.
The right tool for the job
Such a high-profile construction job requires specialized equipment from a trusted and reliable provider, which is why one of the project’s planners, ResourceCo, and its top contactor, Railroad Transport, both settled on Hamelex White’s tippers. To complement the Hamelex White tippers, Railroad Transport chose MaxiTRANS, a leading supplier of road transport equipment for Australia. In addition to its safe and reliable trailers, MaxiTRANS also has an extensive parts and service network throughout the continent, which will play a crucial role in ensuring the project stays on schedule.
According to Railroad Transport officials, the firm’s list of requirements was rather simple; they needed safe combinations that were less than 19 meters long, and capable of accessing Level 2 routes with the biggest payload possible. Although it was no simple task finding the right fit, Hamelex White and MaxiTRANS exceeded the contractor’s lofty requirements, with maximum payloads of under 37 tonnes and the ability to drive through Sydney’s metro and residential areas.
To make the tipper trailers even safer, MaxiTRANS installed a tipper liner and shortened the vehicle overall, which decreased the peak tipping angle and enhanced the unit’s stability. These modifications also let the contractor drive and use them in more places. The changes also enabled up to 6.5 tonnes more carry capacity compared to factory-specified rigid and dog combinations. Each tipper also features electric tarps and an in-cab tipping mechanism, which lets the operator more quickly and safely make deliveries to the jobsite.
The PBS Experts
A big part of Hamelex White’s appeal for the contactors involved in the project is the company’s proven track record regarding Performance Based Standards (PBS) compliance, which refers to a series of 15 standards based on the truck’s purpose and capabilities. Prior to PBS, trucks were regulated based on simple mass and dimension characteristics. Under the new standards, Hamelex White’s tippers and MaxiTRANS’s trailers pass compliance as long as they meet appropriate safety and infrastructure thresholds for things such as the ability to commence forward motion on a specified grade (startability), acceleration, frontal swing, tail swing, yaw damping, horizontal tyre forces, bridge weight limits, and more.
With Hamelex White PBS-approved rigid and four axle dog tippers, backed by MaxiTRANS, the WestConnex project has an excellent chance of completing on time, in 2023.
