Tips For Buying New Trucks

Posted On: Monday, 18 June 2018

Buying a new truck vs. a used one is unique because you’re essentially starting with a blank slate as opposed to looking at something that already has some operating hours on it. By forgoing the savings that often come with buying used, you’re making a longer-term investment that may cost more up-front but can lead to savings down the road with proper maintenance from the start. There are certainly pros and cons to buying new rather than used, but here are some tips that should help you have a higher chance of success while shopping around.

    Lay Out Your Specific Needs

It may sound obvious, but when you begin the process of buying a new truck, it’s much easier to find a vehicle that will suit your needs rather than try to force one into an application where it doesn’t belong. Think about how you will use the truck on a daily basis, what you need to haul, who will be operating it most often, etc. Knowing what you want to get out of your vehicle beforehand will get you started down the right path.

    Take All Components Into Consideration

One of the major benefits of buying a new truck is that most manufacturers will offer a variety of customisation options so you can build your own vehicle with all of the features that are most important to you. Do you want a traditional fuel-powered truck, an electric model, or a hybrid option? Should you go with higher horsepower and torque, or can you get by with a less powerful model? What type of cab configuration and interior layout make the most sense for a given application. Take this opportunity to dig down into the details and fine-tune everything to your liking. After all, chances are you’ll own this truck for many years to come.

    Be Prepared To Wait

When you buy a used truck, the time it takes to receive it comes down to clearing paperwork and then picking up the vehicle or having it delivered. With a new truck, especially if there are customisations, you may need to wait weeks or months for the truck to be ready to roll. Of course, if you don’t want to wait or you don’t need any custom changes, then you can buy a new truck built to pre-determined specifications and add it to your fleet sooner rather than later.

    Compare Connected Services

Almost every truck manufacturer on the market today has embraced connected services to some degree. This includes technologies like remote diagnostics, over the air software updates, and others. These features are invaluable because they constantly deliver information about your vehicle, or fleet of vehicles, so you can schedule maintenance, get advance notice if you may need a repair in the near future, and much more. Take the opportunity to see what connected services a manufacturer offers on its models and how they can help you improve your operation.

    Look For Good Warranties

Warranties on new trucks are a big advantage because if something happens to your vehicle within a certain timeframe, you may be able to get it repaired for free or at a reduced cost. Some warranties come directly from the manufacturer and typically cover the powertrain, although there are some that will cover the truck from stem to stern, and others are extended warranties that may come from a dealership or other third party. Manufacturer warranties don’t typically cost you any extra and cover some of the most crucial components, and while extended warranties often cost extra, they can sometimes be worth it, especially for trucks used for more demanding tasks.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions

Buying a new truck is no small undertaking, so there’s no reason to go it alone. Speak with sales representatives at truck manufacturers and dealerships to understand not only what you’ll get out of a truck, but also what the sales process entails. Work with people that you trust to find the truck that’s right for you and make sure they’ll have your back in terms of support well after the initial sale.
