Tips For Buying Used Trucks

Posted On: Thursday, 21 June 2018

Buying a new truck requires careful consideration, but obtaining a quality used truck for the best price presents unique challenges of its own. Rather than a model direct from the factory floor, you’re dealing with trucks with varying amounts of operating hours that have been used for perhaps a wide range of applications. Chances are your used truck won’t come with a warranty, either, although some dealerships do offer them; for this reason, maintenance is another important factor to take into account. What follows are some general tips to bear in mind when buying a used truck.

    Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance

Maintenance is arguably the most important thing to keep in mind when contemplating used trucks for sale. There is a big difference between a 10-year-old truck that has been well maintained and a 10-year-old truck that has received little attention. Often just looking at the vehicle’s engine can tell you a good deal about whether or not the truck has been properly cared for over the years. Look for any cracks or leaks. Watch out for built-up dirt and grime, which may indicate the internal components are in a comparable condition. Ask the seller whether detailed maintenance records are available, and determine whether previous owners changed the oil and other fluids on a consistent basis. These and other details, including those that may seem small and obvious, can add up to present larger long-term problems if not addressed.

    Cab Condition

A truck’s interior often provides a reasonable indication as to the overall condition of a truck. It may not seem of top importance when inspecting a truck, but it’s vital to ensure that the seats are in good condition, that all of the adjustment levers are in good working order, that the odometer looks correct, etc. Test the steering wheel and other controls to make sure they work properly, and get a general feel for what it would be like to operate the truck long-term. This is particularly important for long haul trucking, as the operator should be as comfortable as possible when transporting cargo across great distances.

    Exterior Condition

The sun is your sidekick when it comes to this part of the process, because you’ll want to make sure you can inspect every inch of a used truck before you buy it. Check the body for patches of rust and other general damage that might have resulted from improper maintenance or accidents. It’s important to look for rust because it can shorten a vehicle’s life considerably, especially if rust has spread throughout the cab and chassis.

    Operating Hours & Applications

In addition to maintenance records, obtain as much history as possible about how the truck has been used. The wear and tear put on a vehicle differs depending on the industry and the primary driving conditions in which it operated. If, for example, a truck was used sparingly for local deliveries and odd jobs, then chances are the mileage and operating hours will be low, which in turn may indicate less wear and tear. Or if the break was used in construction or for long haul transport, then it could be rougher around the edges depending on how it was maintained. And in either case, less visible aspects of the truck’s condition, such as the hydraulics and brakes, should be inspected carefully. If possible, also examine the vehicle’s accident history to determine whether any lingering damage could negatively impact performance.

A Truck To Fit Your Needs

Of course, the condition of a truck is important. But you also need to make sure that it can handle all of the jobs you intend to use it for. Find out the truck’s weight and towing capacities, including ratings directly from the manufacturer. Decide whether you want a truck that comes with a body/trailer as opposed to making that a separate purchase. Finally, make a list of all of the capabilities the truck should have, and make sure you can check off as many of those items as possible.
