Global Logistics Firm Geodis Deploys 1st Volvo Electric Truck In Australia
Global transport and logistics services supplier Geodis recently became the first company in Australia to acquire a Volvo electric truck. The company’s new 6x2 FE Electric will transport parts from its Matraville, New South Wales, headquarters to Volvo Group Australia’s Minto, NSW, Parts Distribution Centre in the outskirts of Sydney.
“Geodis is a low-carbon transport and logistics solution pioneer, and we continually strive to reduce our carbon footprint and limit polluting emissions,” says Geodis Sub-Regional Managing Director-Pacific, Stuart Asplet. “We are delighted to collaborate with Volvo on this path, since we know that our future success will be dependent on sustainable partnerships such as this.”
The FE Electric
The FE Electric has four batteries that collectively supply a 265-kilowatt-hour capacity and a dual-motor driveline that generates 225 kW (302 horsepower) and 850 newton-metres (627 pounds-foot) of torque. The motors are paired with a two-speed automatic transmission. The truck can haul a 7-tonne (7.7-U.S.-ton) payload and has an operational range of up to 220 kilometres (137 miles). The FE Electric is available with options for a day cab, comfort cab, sleeper cab, or low-entry cab, and comes in 4x2 or 6x2 axle configurations.
Geodis installed a 50-kW AC charging station at the depot end of the 47-km (29-mi) route to allow the 10-pallet FE curtainsider to charge while it’s being loaded. The 50-kW charger can take the battery from 0 to 100% in a little over three hours. Volvo says that charging while loading and unloading will ensure the truck has enough charge to go well beyond the daily route requirements.
