Iveco Daily Helps Chef Take His Food On The Road
Chef Francisco Pulido moved from Spain to Australia over 13 years ago and sought to combine his passions for cooking and travel. Traditional food truck operations cook from specially designed bodies built directly on the cab chassis, but that setup didn’t quite meet Pulido’s needs. Each year in March, he travels from his home base in Perth to go north, attending markets and events for six months to bring the flavors of his homeland in the Canary Islands to people in northern Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
To support his busy travel schedule, Pulido purchased an Iveco Daily with a Pantech body, fitted with all the living amenities he needs, that functions as his home away from home. His business, Canarian Cuisine, is based in a 6-metre (19.7-foot) food trailer he tows behind the Daily.
“The Daily is the first real truck I’ve owned, before this I used two smaller vans,” Pulido says. “One of the main reasons for getting the Daily was that it allowed me to fit a 2.4-m-wide by 5.2-m-long body for living accommodation, while still giving me the power and GVM to tow a large food trailer, which houses cool rooms and a multi burner gas cooking setup.”
From his unique rig, Pulido cooks one of Spain’s best-known dishes, paella, offering both traditional and contemporary variations, as well as regional sauces, known as “Mojo Canario.” Pulido’s sauces are also available at select IGA outlets in WA and on his website, www.cheffranciscossauces.com.au.
About The Iveco Daily
Pulido’s Daily has a 3-litre Euro 6 engine capable of 177 horsepower (132 kilowatts) and 430 newton-metres (317 pounds-foot) of torque. The truck is equipped with the Hi-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission, which offers Eco and Power mode functions.
Spending so much time living and working out of the truck, comfort and safety features were a priority for Pulido. The Daily provides a car-like driving experience with ergonomic heated suspension seating and soft-touch steering wheel with asymmetric shape. The high-resolution colour TFT instrument cluster with seven screen menus provides essential information. Ample cabin storage ensures space for personal protective equipment and other needed items. Optional Hi-Connect multimedia and navigation system and cordless inductive charging for mobile phone and other devices are also available. Extra-long mirror arms were added for better visibility around Pulido’s trailer.
The Daily offers a wide range of safety features, including Advanced Emergency Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Crosswind Assist, and the ESP9 suite of stability control technologies. The ESP9 includes anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, an electronic stability program, an anti-slip regulator, drag torque control, hill hold control, enhanced under-steering control, adaptive load control, trailer sway mitigation, hydraulic rear-wheel boost, hydraulic fading compensation, roll movement intervention, and rollover mitigation.
“It’s reassuring to have the extra technology and safety equipment of the Daily—the four airbags, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and so on, it’s nice to know it’s there,” says Pulido.
