Supply Chain Provider Martin Brower Australia Adds Volvo FL Electric Truck To Fleet
Martin Bower Australia recently added its first electric delivery truck to its roughly 200-vehicle fleet, a Volvo FL Electric 4x2 battery-electric refrigerated truck. The supply chain provider uses the truck seven days a week to haul up to eight pallets of supplies at a time while completing deliveries to McDonald’s restaurants across the greater Sydney metropolitan area.
Maccas’ Greenhouse Gas Goals
Martin Brower Australia operates six distribution centres and serves 1,026 locations overall. The haulier’s working relationship with McDonald’s dates to 1971, when the fast food chain opened its first Australian location in Yagoona, southwest of Sydney. Martin Brower now makes deliveries to McDonald’s locations across the country.
McDonald’s is aiming to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions globally by 2050. The fast-food giant and Martin Brower Australia hope to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
“The delivery of this first electric truck for the region is just one part of our broader sustainability strategy to decarbonise our operations and achieve our 2030 emissions reduction target,” says Scott Hanigan, Martin Brower managing director for Australia and New Zealand. “While we recognise there is a lot of progress to be made in the heavy electric vehicle space, we are excited to work with Volvo to better understand how we can integrate this new technology into our fleet moving forward.”
An Electric Workhorse
The FL Electric's quiet operation and zero tailpipe emissions make it an excellent choice for pickup and delivery routes in urban locations. Martin Brower Australia’s truck can hold up to 4.6 tonnes (5.1 U.S. tons) of goods and has a gross combination weight of up to 16.7 t (18.4 U.S. t). It can travel up to 230 kilometres (143 miles) before its battery packs require recharging.
Customers can equip the FL Electric with three or four battery packs, providing 280 to 375 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Volvo provides an AC wall box for overnight recharging, which takes about 16.8 hours at 22 kilowatts. Owners can also opt for recharging at 150 kW on DC power, shortening the time to about 2.3 hours.
A Look At The Volvo FL Electric
The FL Electric is available with a day cab or a comfort cab. Its two axles are air-suspended for a smooth ride. The truck's 600-volt electric motor supplies up to 130 kW (175 horsepower) of continuous power through a 2-speed transmission. Its regenerative braking system helps recharge the batteries throughout the workday and extends the lifespan of the brakes.
